It seems like execution is no longer a deterrent to murder these days...

It's been said that for a deterrent to be effective, it must be swift, certain, and severe. The death penalty today is anything but swift and certain.

I fail to see how execution by any method can be humane. Sometimes people are wrongly convicted of crimes they didn’t commit and then executed. Where is the justice in that situation? Capital punishment is and always has been barbaric.

I truly believe that sincere Christians stand on both sides of this issue. There are compelling Biblical arguments both for and against the use of capital punishment.

Ultimately, of course, we know that true justice can only come from God.

Thank you for the link. It definitely helps to see the “arguments.” I think the repentance issue is at the heart of my opinion. If someone is not given the chance to repent and be converted because human justice is being served (execution), then God’s justice (at the heart of which is love and mercy) is being denied.

Your reasoning is one of the most prevalent arguments against capital punishment from a Christian perspective. I doubt you need any additional information, but just in case someone else is reading this and would like to research the Christian perspective further I found the following two articles to be well-written and informative:

Why I Support Capital Punishment

Why I Oppose Capital Punishment

With all due respect regarding your humanistic stand regarding the disposal of society's refuse, there is something called a sociopath. These characters have no conscience and repentance is out of the question. Likewise, pedophiles cannot be "fixed".

In the movie SOYLENT GREEN, the passing of Sol Roth is portrayed as a kindness. Warehousing unrepentant criminals until they die strikes me as cruel and unusual punishment. A massive overdose of a barbiturate for barbarous and monstrous criminals, while too kind, would spare society the cost of maintaining these monsters for decades and there would be no chance they'd be released to prey on humanity ever again.
