Having grown up in the rural south and knowing how set in their ways folks were then, I can only imagine the resistance that took place as this needed change took place. It's impossible to imagine what it must have been like when there was no standardized time.
I guess that was the reason everyone used to complain about the trains being "always late" or "always early" .
