The letters Adams and Jefferson exchanged in those later years, including some from Abigail Adams to Jefferson, are worth reading. They express mutual respect and friendship, but also different viewpoInts on exactly what the revolution was all about.
I think people forget that the two of them literally represented the political split that has defined our nation from the very beginning. They had very different opinions on how the country should be formed and what direction it should take. Their early friendship gave way to terrible animosity. The fact that they were able to overcome it enough to reignite their friendship says a lot about them as people. It's an incredible example we should all strive to emulate.
Amen. We are all uniquely made, and this story shows the journey that forges through evil. God never intending us to wallow in pits of despair, and un-forgiveness. Reconciliation IS the reason He came!!
Forgiveness is crucial to being mentally healthy. I forgave my ex husband for what he did because I knew it would benefit my daughters. He passed away shortly after I remarried. I make sure and bring up his good qualities and make sure our girls know he helped make them who they are. It's not always about us.
So good and timely! The theme of forgiveness and bearing with one another is huge in my life right now. Thank you for sharing such rich devotionals here 🙏🏾💓
Forgiveness is vital to spiritual growth. It is wonderful to remember that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams reconciled their differences. But the world has changed to the point where tour guides at Monticello now emphasize the fact that Jefferson owned slaves and that he is representative of our ingrained racism.
I cannot forgive the 2020 rioters for defacing Washington DC, attempting to burn police alive, and causing general havoc. Were those humans or demons? Someday we will learn.
Forgiveness indeed plays a crucial role in our spiritual journey, as Jesus Himself emphasized in the Lord's Prayer and through His life and teachings. But forgiveness does not equate to condoning something. It is about freeing ourselves from the burden of anger and hatred, which can consume our spirit and hinder our relationship with God.
The reconciliation between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams is a powerful historical example of forgiveness and moving beyond deep personal and political differences.
In Christianity, forgiveness isn't optional. Jesus clearly taught us to forgive as we have been forgiven. Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV) states, "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." This underscores the necessity of forgiveness as a cornerstone of our faith.
Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV) reminds us, "Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Forgiveness can be incredibly challenging, especially in the face of passionate differences. Yet, through prayer and seeking God's guidance, we can work towards it, allowing His peace to heal our hearts.
Let's continue to strive for understanding and reconciliation, not only in our personal lives but also within our communities and nation. Our ultimate goal is to reflect Christ's love and forgiveness, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
You can forgive them, leave room for God’s wrath. Jesus died for them too, yet if they don’t answer the knock, they’ve exercised their free will, chose who they serve. We are called to forgive, just as we’ve been forgiven. We don’t, we find our hearts harden. That’s why we trust Him, He knows better. But boy, do I agree about the evil destruction & defacing, and we’ve got our job cut out for us, don’t we?? Also not a mistake we were born in this time, let’s be who He meant for us to be. Right where we are.

Now, nearly 200 years later, the powers-that-be in Washington, D.C. would rather imprison their opponents rather than respect them...
Dr. Benjamin Rush (also a Signer of the Declaration of Independence), was the mediator between Adams and Jefferson to reconcile the friendship.
Rush was an important founder but is largely forgotten today.
